Puto Bumbong is a local Philippine treat which is also part of the Philippine Christmas Tradition. Here, the Christmas season officially starts on the first day of the “Simbang Gabi” or Mass At Dawn which is a 9 day novena to the Blessed Mother and it starts on December 16.
During this period or even throughout the holidays, vendors selling Puto Bumbong line the streets around churches all over the country. Puto Bumbong is made of ground rice and cooked in bamboo tubes using a traditional steamer. It has a violet or purple color and served with butter and grated coconut meat on a heated banana leaf.
