Puto Bumbong is a local Philippine treat which is also part of the Philippine Christmas Tradition. Here, the Christmas season officially starts on the first day of the “Simbang Gabi” or Mass At Dawn which is a 9 day novena to the Blessed Mother and it starts on December 16.

During this period or even throughout the holidays, vendors selling Puto Bumbong line the streets around churches all over the country. Puto Bumbong is made of ground rice and cooked in bamboo tubes using a traditional steamer. It has a violet or purple color and served with butter and grated coconut meat on a heated banana leaf.

My wife, who is pregnant, has been craving for a puto bumbong. I know she doesn’t really like it but it’s because of her pregnancy. So, we went to our City Cathedral, which is just a walking distance away from our home, very early in the morning to buy her a puto bumbong and, since vendors were everywhere, we were able to go back home immediately.

I don’t like Puto Bumbong that much in fact I like the Palitaw better but my daughter, Aryan, liked it and it served its purpose. After tasting the puto bumbong, Dang’s craving for it disappeared. Ahhhh… the mysteries of pregnancy! I’ll never understand it. LOL!
